Son of Man has a unique place in Father Alexander Men's corpus; it is the book which he began as a youth and then completed many years later as the capstone of his study of world religions. But beyond that we may see it as the key to the lasting importance of Father Alexander, not just as a teacher and martyr of the Russian Church, but as a spiritual example and guide for all Christians today. For in Father Alexander we see on the one hand an absolute and serene certainty in the faith and on the other hand an absolute openness and fearlessness before everything in the world and an open embrace of the present and the future.
Either trait, serenity or openness, is (in the deepest sense) uncommon; found together they are so rare as to be almost paradoxical. But is not the resolution to the paradox of Father Alexander simply in the depth of his devotion to Jesus Christ and in his putting on the mind of Christ? So the revolutionary quality of Men's Christianity is simply in his radical and personal closeness to Jesus Christ.
And in Son of Man we come to the heart of a modern saint whose work is of incalculable importance for the future of Christianity … and this is important … but we are also drawn closer to the heart of the Lord, and surely this is still more important. In this Father Alexander's secret becomes ours as well, the personal knowledge of the One known as the Son of Man.
